Swell maps - Jane From Occupied Europe

Swell Maps were a British experimental rock group of the 1970s from Birmingham, that foreshadowed the birth of post-punk.

Influenced by the disparate likes of T. Rex and the German progressive outfit Can, they created a new soundscape that would be heavily mined by others in the post-punk era. Despite existing in various forms since 1972, Swell Maps only really came together as a musical entity after the birth of British punk rock.

Castevet-Summer Fences

Chicago’s CSTVT (formerly Castevet) is band that combines the upbeat passages of midwest punk rock with intricate guitar work and shouted, but melodic vocals. Drawing inspiration from bands like American Football, Small Brown Bike, Appleseed Cast, and Braid, CSTVT has taken these influences and created a sound of their own.

Their first full length, ‘Summer Fences’ was released on Count Your Lucky Stars records in June of 2009.

formed in 2008 once moving into their secret warehouse headquarters in Philadelphia. The first full-length “Breakfast” will be released on November 20th on Self Aware Records. (Charlotte NC) “Breakfast” is the follow up to their first demo “Insert Hear” which was released in early 2009. Bandname was also featured on the now infamous 75:24 comp.

Elmo Marconi - The Number Eight EP

Fresno, Ca. based Elmo Marconi formed in the summer of 2007, started up by bassist Colby Tibbet (formally in Tree Wizard) and guitarisst Arthur Bueno (formally in Winter Soldier) . Bonding over their love of bands like Cap N' Jazz and other similiar music tastes they started jamming and making music that would later turn into a full band. Enlisting Sahab Hobob as their vocalist, Rico Rodriguez on drums, and Mike Adame on keyboard they would release "The Number 8" ep

later that year. After a few lineup changes Jesse Kennedy was added as their permanent drummer and Mike Adame taking the reigns as lead vocalist after the departure of Sahab Hobob They would go on to release "I Don't Want To Be Serious Right Now, Lets Go Watch Some Ghost Movies" in mid 2008 and their full length "Puppies And Other Cute Shit" in early 2009. Playing house shows and venues relentlessly since the beginning they aquired a rapid following around not only Fresno, but places like Sacramento and Oakland as well.

Veneers was a bit unexpected. The band contains members of Polina so I was expecting something a bit heavier, full of screams. Instead I got slow plodding post punk with just a bit of swagger and snottiness. Even though I don't jam the Haram record nearly as much as Kevin does, I immediately thought of it while listening to the Veneers songs. This may turn some people off, but some of the vocals have a bit of an older Mae Shi vibe to them, but maybe that's just me. A good mix of attitude, urgency and frantic shouting. I really dig both songs a lot and I'm super excited to see what they do next. I guess there is a tape floating around somewhere, so I'll have to get my hands on that soon.

On side B, 3 songs from L/P. Really fun and fast punk rock with a bit of a garage pop edge to it. Like a bunch of east coast pop kids who grew up listening to that Halifax pop sound doing their best Stooges impersonation. Toss in a bit of Bad Brains rippin' hardcore punk style for good measure and you have a pretty decent idea of what to expect. I figured I'd like this side of the record a lot less than the Veneers side, but in all honesty it's grown on me quite a bit. There is a lot of interesting stuff going on, and they're really fun tunes.

Boy Problems were from Philadelphia.
They broke up in December 2008.

It’s been over a year since they played that awkward reunion show and still no one gives a shit. They played one in Philadelphia at the Ox on December 31st, 2009 to a pretty big crowd. They were real drunk because it was New Years Eve and they were stoked to hang out with their friends, party, and have fun. It sounded kind of…not good, but the band had a fun time playing with their friends and just hangin’ out, so who really cares. Thankfully, all we have to remember them by is a discography that blows.

VERSE EN COMA was formed by the songwriting backbone of MALADY (Jeff Kane, Kevin Longendyke, Jonathan Moore) and joined by Darkest Hour/City of Caterpillar drummer (Ryan Parrish) and multi-talented vocalist Brian Markham. Most of the songs were written towards the end of Malady but re-vamped and enhanced with the joining of Parrish and Markham to the group. The results are an impressive and varied recording, which was engineered and executed by the band themselves over a several-year period.

Street Smart Cyclist were twinkle daddies from the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. SSC was composed of Jon Geeting on guitar, Ross Brazuk on guitar, John Galm on vocals (replaced briefly by Jonathan “Cody” Garwacke of Yo Man, Go!), Nate Dionne on bass, and Dave Geeting on drums. Brad “the Fat Kid” Raub was the original bass player. Matthew Wirick refused to play keyboards. Street Smart Cyclist formed in late 2005 and started playing out in January 2006.
