Bloodthirsty Butchers are a long-running indie rock and punk rock band from Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. Although little-known in the West, they have contributed to two compilations on the Olympia, Washington based Yoyo label. The band has also released a split single with Rocket from the Crypt and a split CD-EP with +/-. Japanese act Lost in Time named their band after a song from band's third album Lukewarm Wind. The long-term members are Hideki Yoshimura (Vocals and Guitar), Masahiro Komatsu (Drums), and Takeshi Imoriya (Bass). Former Number Girl member Hisako Tabuchi joined as an additional guitarist in 2003.^[1] Famous Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu is an avid fan of the group and has sung and played guitar on a few of the band's songs.

Frontman Hideki Yoshimura also plays guitar for other Japanese indie acts such as Copass Grinderz and Discharming Man.

As is clearly evident from the tracks named after the months of the year, kocorono is a tried and true concept album, and its slow pace coupled with noisy, complex melodies would risk running any lesser recording into the ground. But as much as each of the individual songs were carefully constructed from the bottom up, the album as a whole was cleanly sculpted from the top downwards. And amazingly, kocorono almost never sags, thanks to the complementary nature of its tracks. The upbeat "march" kicks the album into gear after introspective "february," just as "september" helps the album wind down (perhaps a bit too well) after the emotional apex of "july" and "august." "october," with the drill-like intensity of its opening riffs, gives the album a strong jolt to the finish line after its lengthy mid-section. In a surprise move, the butchers finish their opus not with a quiet touch, but with one of their most melodic and high-spirited numbers ("december"), catching the listener with one final shot of adrenaline on the way out the door to leave a gripping impression.

Grass Widow - Past Time

The San Francisco band Grass Widow braids apparitional vocals over distorted post-punk riffs. At the center of its songs are the troika harmonies of Lillian Maring (drums), Hannah Lew (bass) and Raven Mahon (guitar), who contribute vocals equally, echoing the band’s process.

Grass Widow’s lyrics, matched with its cautiously joyous beats, reflect its vision of the world: a mysterious Ozlike land in which the surface looks radiant and colorful but with a thinly veiled underside that reveals a fearful and fateful ethereal reality.

Grass Widow mesmerizes with its bewitching tales and eerie, obsessive melodies. But at the core of its captivation are the vocal harmonies. “When we play live,” Maring says, “we’ll all be chiming in vocally, and we’ll make eye contact; it’s like we’re singing to each other.”

IMHO if you like the evens, sleater kinney and vivian girls. its kinda somwhere between those bands.

Track ‘Chemistry’ was made available from the NME daily download blog. The band have recently toured with Minus the Bear and Tubelord and are heading out to Europe in November to support 65daysofstatic.

Foals - Total Life Forever

Jack Bevan, Eilish May and Yannis Philippakis were originally in cult math rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald, which did not gain much media interest. The group was disbanded after they claimed that things had become "too serious" and they wanted to have more "fun making their music".

Walter and Jimmy were part of a small Oxford band called Face Meets Grill. They met at and were formed from members of Abingdon Boys School. They played gigs in and around Oxford and recording a debut EP in Hull. After playing Truck Festival in 2004 they separated to follow different paths and careers.

Guitarist Jimmy Smith is the only one of the band members to have completed his degree, at Hull University: each of the band members quit their respective universities including Yannis and Edwin leaving their English courses at Oxford University, when the band signed to Transgressive Records by Ben Mackereth.

The lead singer of Youthmovies, Andrew Mears, originally formed the band Foals, playing as guitarist and lead vocalist. He was present on the band's debut 7" single "Try This On Your Piano/Look At My Furrows Of Worry", but left shortly afterwards to concentrate on Youthmovies' debut album Good Nature.

The band likes to be self-sufficient, so all of the music videos are created by their friend Dave Ma and all of the artwork (excluding cover art of Total Life Forever) is also done by their friend Tinhead.

The band’s musical influences are varied, with the band members citing minimal techno, Arthur Russell, the Irish based math rock band The Redneck Manifesto, Krautrock bands such as Harmonia, and Talking Heads as well For London (previously known as The Jester People) as their main sources of inspiration. Their musical style however can be more directly linked to various genres such as indie rock, dance-punk, post-punk and techno.

In early 2007, the band released the limited edition 7" singles Hummer and Mathletics, both produced by Gareth Parton.^[2] "Hummer" later featured on the Channel Four teen drama Skins.

Total Life Forever

In August 2009, Foals started recording their album at Svenska Grammofon Studion in Gothenburg, Sweden. The band's second album, Total Life Forever, has been described by the band members as sounding like "tropical prog" and "like the dream of an eagle dying".^[6] The band have described the album as being "a lot less funk" than they had originally planned.^{[citation needed]} The album was produced by Luke Smith, formerly of Clor. The album's title is named after an element of Ray Kurzweil's theory of singularity. The band's frontman Yannis Philippakis has stated a long time interest in futurology with it informing numerous songs on Total Life Forever.^[7]

On March 1, 2010, the promotional single "Spanish Sahara" was first played on Zane Lowe's show Radio 1. Foals' new website was updated that night with the release of a video for the track directed by longtime collaborator Dave Ma. On March 6, the Total Life Forever site was officially launched. Puzzles revealed images, lyrics and sound clips of songs from the album, which was all set up by Yannis' close friend Gary Gunn. The last clip appeared on March 12, and resulted with a password entry for the Foals' new website. The site was opened on March 13 and presented the whole new art concept and media including samples of songs, photos and videos. Lead single "This Orient" was released on May 3, 2010.^[8] The album was finally released on May 10, 2010.

"Spanish Sahara" was featured in trailers for Entourage 's seventh season, season four of Skins, and BBC One 's Outcasts. It was also used in the soundtrack of the second season of the E4 drama Misfits. It was released as a full physical single in September 2010, featuring an edited remix starring the strings of London Contemporary Orchestra.

The album was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize.^[9] In an interview with online magazine Coup De Main, Jimmy Smith said how the band members live together on and off the road - heading to Australia to record demos for their next album together. "It's just like touring with your family, it's nice".

You Say Party! We Say Die! was a Canadian five piece dance-punk band from Abbotsford, British Columbia. Their album Hit the Floor! was released in September 2005, and the band recently completed their second Canadian tour, an appearance at South by Southwest and a tour of the United States, before touring the United Kingdom and Germany. Their second album Lose All Time was released in Canada on March 20, 2007, and in the United States on Aug 18, 2007, on Paper Bag Records, in the United Kingdom on June 18, 2007, on Fierce Panda Records and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on August 17, 2007, on PIAS. Their third album XXXX was released on September 29, 2009 in Canada, February 9, 2010 in the USA and was released on May 17, 2010 in the UK.

The Depreciation Guild - In Her Gentle Jaws + Nautilus

The Depreciation Guild (2005-2010) was a dreampop band from Brooklyn, NY, USA. Recognized as much for their unexpected arrangements as for their unique blend of gauzy guitars and Nintendo Famicom programming, The Depreciation Guild developed somewhat of a cult following in their five years in existence.

Originally a vehicle of songwriter / producer Kurt Feldman, the band’s first recorded output was Nautilus, an EP made available for free download through New York netlabel 8 Bit Peoples in 2006. After recruiting Akira Hashizume as second guitarist, the group went on to record their first LP, In Her Gentle Jaws, which was released as a free download from their website in December of 2007. This album was self-engineered in New York and mixed by Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv, Sons Of Magdalene) in Chicago, IL. Hashizume left the band in 2007 and was replaced by guitarist Christoph Hochheim. Anton Hochheim joined the band in 2008 as drummer.

In 2009, the trio signed to Kanine Records who released the remainder of their recorded work: two singles, Dream About Me (June, 2009) and Blue Lily (September, 2010) as well as their second full-length album, Spirit Youth (May, 2010) which was also engineered, mixed and produced by Joshua Eustis. A limited edition vinyl reissue of the now deleted In Her Gentle Jaws album was released in 2009 as well. Depreciation Guild’s second and final album, Spirit Youth, aimed to broaden the group’s sonic palette, emphasizing pop hooks over gimmick and adding layers of live instrumentation to their already lush sound.

After touring extensively in Europe, the United States and Japan in 2009 and 2010, the band amicably split to pursue other musical endeavors.

In August of 2010, the band released an original iPhone puzzle game called TileWild as a collaboration between Kurt Feldman and programmer Hayden Cacace, which featured three new compositions written for the game. While the band is currently defunct, Depreciation Guild, Inc. continues to develop games for the iPhone OS.

Currently, Kurt writes and produces music for his synthpop project, The Ice Choir. He also plays drums in The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Christoph is a touring guitarist for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and writes music under his solo moniker, Able Body. Anton currently plays drums in the Brooklyn-based experimental rock band, dinowalrus.

Pedro the Lion was an indie rock band from Seattle, Washington, comprising David Bazan and TW Walsh. Because of the biblical references in many of their songs, Pedro the Lion were seen by some to be a Christian band, but they did not consider the band to be such.

i spent most of this morning thinking what album is the best introduction to no age? i personaly like Weirdo Rippers more. its a bit noise rock and reminds me of lovvers and other bands like that.

No Age is a two-person American indie rock group consisting of guitarist Randy Randall and drummer/vocalist Dean Allen Spunt. The band is based in Los Angeles and is currently signed to Sub Pop records. The duo initially played together with drummer Jeremy Villalobos in Wives, and takes their name from the title of a 1987 SST Records instrumental compilation, which Spunt discovered while working at Aron's, a record store in Los Angeles.^[1] Along with the bands Health, Mika Miko, Silver Daggers, Abe Vigoda, BARR, and David Scott Stone, No Age has been listed as a mainstay of the Downtown Los Angeles venue The Smell.^[2] The band has strong ties with the Los Angeles underground community centered around The Smell. No Age has released three full-length albums, toured extensively in support of them, and is a strong advocate of the All-ages Movement Project, an organization that connects youth to each other and to the arts through independent music.^[3]

Everything In Between is the second studio album from LA-based duo No Age that was released through Sub Pop on September 28, 2010. The first single was "Glitter." The album's artwork was designed by Brian Roettinger, who also designed the artwork for Nouns. In late August, Sub Pop posted a trailer on their Vimeo page for the album featuring a leather bound figure pumping a device to the beat of "Life Prowler."^[13] On September 21st, No Age released the album for streaming on The Guardian website.^[14] It was ranked the 13th best album of 2010 by Pitchfork Media.^[15]

Formed in 2008, Gosport, Southern England, four-piece Bear Cavalry are a band consisting of Louis Pinder (Guitar, Vocals, Synth), Dan Kirk (Guitar, Trumpet, Synth), Owen Ballantyne (Bass) and Matthew Cooke (Drums). They play spindley math rock guitars with an experimental indie attitude. In 2009 they released a self-recorded EP called Two Seasons and in 2010 released another free EP entitled Canadia. Both of which can be downloaded for free from the band’s Bandcamp page.

Ty Segall is an American musician and songwriter. He sings and plays guitar and drums. He has released four solo albums and is a member of the bands The Traditional Fools, Epsilons, Party Fowl, Sic Alps, and The Perverts.

Segall began his recording career as a part-time musician in various underground bands in Orange County and the San Francisco Bay Area, before beginning a solo career in 2008. Segall's first solo release was the cassette "Horn The Unicorn" released on the Wizard Mountain label (later re-released by HBSP-2X on vinyl record). Around the same time Wizard Mountain also released a split cassette featuring Segall and the band "Superstitions" entitled "Halfnonagon". Segall's next album entitled "Ty Segall" was released on Castle Face Records in 2008. The album was followed by a string of limited 7" singles and a split LP with the band "Black Times". Segall's next album "Lemons" was released by Goner Records in 2009 to positive reviews.^[3] This release was followed by another string of successful and limited 7" singles and the LP "Reverse Shark Attack" an album with longtime collaborator Mikal Cronin. Segall's fourth album "Melted" was also released by Goner Records in 2010 to more positive reviews and placed in some "Best of 2010 Lists" such as Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Spin.^[4] Ty Segall's 2010 album, "Melted," was quoted from Pitchfork's Paul Thompson as a rock and roll artists who will give you a "kick in the pants." He is considered to be much evolved from his first album, and more in control of his music and voice, making it seem effortless.<sup>[5]

The Death of Anna Karina were born from the course of the hc-band Inedia, project with Davide and Alessandro on guitars and some other friends, started in 1999.

Changed with a new line-up during summer-autumn-winter 2001 with the entry of Giulio at voice first, Luca at bass and Adriano at drums then, Inedia setted up their musical approach, someone called it “chaos ‘n’ roll”, under the influence of Refused, Reversal of Man, JR Ewing and Orchid.

At their second show, Boris of Heroine Records received a really good impression from their exibition and they planned an LP together.

In 2004 they started a band called "BLACKBLACK" with Lola's boyfriend Alex Greenwald from Phantom Planet, who performs as his alter-ego "Clark Schädelkopf" in the context of the band. Schädelkopf means "skullhead" in German. The Dompe sisters are both daughters of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins. this side project offers up an indie rock sensibility with an extremely energetic backdrop of experimental noise.

Briana Smith (guitar, Keys, vocals) and Jessica Seamans (bass, recorder, vocals), the core members, grew up in the Brainerd Lakes area in a town called Crosby, and are real-life best friends. At first “two brainy, nerdy outcasts who eventually developed a fierce mutual devotion, although when they first met in 5th grade they made a lousy impression on each other, but not for long. As they discovered they had the same passion for gothy, alt-rock giants Smashing Pumpkins and a hunger to make their own music, they melded together as friends. Still in their teen years. they recorded their first two songs, “I want to plug U in” and “The BFF theme song”, on a split 7” with “Everybell” on the tiny say-and-stay-said label recorded march 2003 and released may 2003 in a serie of 300 clear vinyl records that were the christening release for the label as well. The records were split up between the groups and each had 150 hand-screen printed sleeves. The BFF sleeves were (and mostly are still) designed by Jessica Seamans.
A year later in their first trio line up with Karl Rotto on drums they recorded a CDep. Cute, cheerful, and unabashedly ramshackle, the group first made a splash on the local scene with the release of their self-titled debut in 2004. That album’s standout track was “My Head in Front of Your Head.” A love note to Abraham Lincoln with an instantly catchy chorus and lyrics as smart as they were silly, it had every element of a classic college-radio hit.

Intelligence is a lo-fi indie post punk rock band from Seattle, founded by Lars Finberg, drummer of the A-Frames.

Finberg played since the late ’90s in other bands with vocalist/guitarist Erin Sullivan, and bassist Min Yee: the Dipers, and the Un-Natural Helpers. A Frames and the Intelligence started in 1999. Both acts released singles on Dragnet Records, the indie label Finberg runs with A Frames members Erin Sullivan and Min Yee.

Women are an art rock band from Calgary, Canada. Their debut album Women was released on VanGaalen's label Flemish Eye on July 8, 2008 in Canada^[1] and on Jagjaguwar in the United States on October 7, 2008.^[2]. It was rumoured that the band broke up on October 29, 2010 after a fight on stage at a show at the Lucky Bar in Victoria although their management has stated that they have merely canceled the rest of their tour.

Women's second album, Public Strain, was released in Canada, via Flemish Eye Records, and in the United States, UK, and Europe, via Jagjaguwar Records, on September 28, 2010. The album has received praise from across the media spectrum. Pitchfork, Exclaim!, Filter, and BBC have all turned-in positive reviews in favour of the album. The band started with a Europe tour, followed by a US tour in the fall of 2010. It was rumoured that the band broke up on October 29, 2010 after a fight on stage at a show at the Lucky Bar in Victoria although their management has stated that they have merely canceled the rest of their tour. Pitchfork released a 3 song live video in February 2011 shot in an empty factory a few weeks before their indefinite hiatus^[10]

Some members of Women also play in the live band of Chad VanGaalen.
